How to spot fake Ray-Ban sunglasses?

Real and fake Ray-Ban sunglasses side by side for comparison
Comparison between authentic and fake Ray-Ban sunglasses.

Counterfeits are everywhere online and even in some stores. Fake Ray-Ban sunglasses are a real scourge in the fight against counterfeiting. The good news: you can spot them by looking at a few key details — details many buyers still don’t know. So, how can you tell if the Ray-Ban sunglasses you’re buying are authentic? What are the clues that separate real Ray-Bans from fakes?

Why are there so many fake Ray-Ban sunglasses online?

Ray-Ban sunglasses are among the most famous in the world. From the legendary Aviator worn by US Air Force fighter pilots to the Wayfarer made iconic by celebrities, every frame has become a classic. That success attracts counterfeiters: thousands of cheap sunglasses flood the web. They mimic the shapes (round, square, rectangular, cat-eye…) without offering the quality of polarized lenses or the UV protection essential to eye health.

  • Non-compliant sun lenses (no UV filter, off tints, increased glare);
  • Fragile frames (low-grade plastic, poorly fitted hinges, no quality acetate or titanium);
  • Poor visual comfort (distortion, scratches, headaches).

How to tell if Ray-Ban sunglasses are real or fake

Check several indicators: price, the logo, the RB laser etching, the inner temple markings, and the case. Every detail matters.

1. Price

If you see a pair at €40 or less, walk away — it’s almost certainly a scam (except junior models). On average, genuine prices range from €70 to €160 depending on model and edition (often €90–€180 in practice depending on lenses: polarized, gradient, mirror, photochromic, etc.).

2. The logo

The Ray-Ban logo must appear in the upper-right corner of the right lens. It follows the curve of the frame. On fakes, this is rarely the case. The logo should be crisp, balanced, and not wipe off with a fingernail.

Optician’s tip: tilt the lenses slightly towards the light: the marking remains thin and clean with no smudging. A logo that’s too thick, blurry, or misplaced is suspect.

3. Lens etching (RB engraving)

Genuine Ray-Bans feature a discreet RB laser etching (usually on the left lens). On counterfeits, this is missing or simply printed on the surface.

4. Inside the temples

The inner temples of Ray-Ban frames must include:

  • Exact references: 4 digits after RB, followed by the color code (e.g., RB 2132 902). Then two numbers separated by a square indicating size (e.g., 50☐22). Finally, a digit/letter pair for lens type (N = Neutral, P = Polarized, F = Photochromic).
  • The “CE” mark (EU standards);
  • The model name, if any.

5. The case

All Ray-Ban frames come with their original case. Inside, you’ll find a Ray-Ban cleaning cloth and a Luxottica leaflet (the official manufacturer). Some collections may ship with a different case (material or color variations). Junior/children models have a smaller case and may not include a cloth.

Another important note

Bausch & Lomb used to manufacture Ray-Ban, but production is now handled by Luxottica. Products marked BL or Bausch & Lomb cannot be genuine unless they date from before 1999 (the acquisition date).

How to choose an authentic frame

For a safe purchase, choose an optician or an authorized retailer. At Visiofactory, every pair is checked (frames, polarized lenses, gradient, mirror, photochromic, etc.). Pick according to your face shape: round face → rectangular frames; square face → round frames; oval face → any shape; triangular face → thin metal frames.

Better a real Ray-Ban than a fake shine

Fakes may look tempting on price, but they put your visual comfort, eye health, and durability at risk. With the right logo, a clean RB engraving, consistent inner-temple markings, and an authentic case, you can avoid counterfeits. Trust a recognized optician: quality materials (acetate, metal, titanium), sun lenses that block harmful UV rays, options like polarized, photochromic or gradient, and compatibility with prescription/progressive lenses.

At Visiofactory, we guarantee genuine Ray-Ban sunglasses — just like all our products.
